School bus/dump truck crash causes several injuries

A lot of parents in North Carolina send their children to school on school buses. Those parents ostensibly hope their children will be safe riding the bus; however, school buses have to share the road with other vehicles. While a school bus driver would hopefully remain vigilant and careful on the road with such precious cargo on board, the driver has may have little recourse sometimes in avoiding an accident caused by another driver. Such seems to be the case in a recent accident in Charlotte involving a school bus and a dump truck.

Accident details

Around 6:30 a.m. the morning of Wednesday May 11, a school bus was traveling on Sharonbrook Drive. At the same time, a dump truck was approaching the bus, heading in the opposite direction. The dump truck reportedly collided head-on with the school bus, as well as another vehicle that was not identified in the report.

The dump truck driver told authorities that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel, causing his truck to broach the center line and collide with the school bus and another vehicle. Fourteen students suffered injuries in the crash (non-life-threatening), and both the school bus driver and dump truck driver suffered serious injuries. Reports state it took emergency crews around 30 minutes to free each driver from his or her respective vehicle. The driver of the third vehicle that was hit apparently did not suffer injuries.

Legal recourse

The report states that authorities determined the dump truck driver committed a moving violation by crossing the road’s center line into oncoming traffic; however, the report said no charges have been filed against the driver. Since the dump truck driver admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel, those adversely affected by the horrible accident may use that as evidence in personal injury claims against the driver as well as anyone else who has ownership interest in his truck.  In order to increase their chances of obtaining the best outcome possible, injured parties should work closely with an experienced personal injury attorney in North Carolina for assistance and advocacy.
